Discovering the Magic of Colombia: A Three-Week Adventure
Hola, fellow travelers! Buckle up because I'm about to take you on a breathtaking three-week journey through Colombia, a country bursting with vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning landscapes. From the bustling cities to the lush coffee regions, we’re diving deep into the heart of this South American gem. Whether you're planning your first trip or seeking new adventures, I promise you’ll leave inspired!
Chapter 1: Arrival in Medellín
My adventure began in Medellín, the “City of Eternal Spring.” As I landed, I was greeted by a pleasant climate and the breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. If you’re thinking about airfare to Medellín, I found some good deals on Skyscanner Colombia. Make sure to compare options—affordable flights can often be found!
Tip: The best month to go to Colombia is generally between December and February or June to August. These months offer pleasant weather for exploring.
Exploring Medellín
Staying at the charming Orange Suites Medellin was a highlight! Located in the Poblado neighborhood, it was easy to navigate the city from there. The style was modern, but the vibe...oh so cozy!
My first day was spent exploring Plaza Botero, where you can find the oversized sculptures by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. From there, I strolled down to the Museo de Antioquia, which is filled with incredible local art.
For dinner, you cannot miss Carmen. It’s a fine dining experience that features local flavors with a modern twist. The dishes are creative and unforgettable!
Coffee Tours from Medellín
No trip to Medellín is complete without a coffee tour! I booked a tour with Cafe San Alberto, which took us to the lush coffee plantations in the nearby Coffee Triangle. The tour was informative; I learned the entire process from bean to cup, and of course, enjoyed tasting their superb brews.
Chapter 2: Cartagening it Up!
After a week in Medellín, I took a short flight to Cartagena. Flying to Cartagena from Medellín is super easy, and the flight only takes about an hour. There’s so much to do here!
Old Town Cartagena
Once in Cartagena, I was immediately struck by how beautifully preserved the Old Town is. The colorful buildings, vibrant street art, and lively plazas create an enchanting atmosphere. Make sure to grab a refreshing coconut water from one of the local vendors as you explore!
One picturesque afternoon, I headed to Las Iguanas, a cozy restaurant where I indulged in some of the freshest ceviche I've ever tasted. Trust me, you need to savor the flavors of the Caribbean while here!
Castillo San Felipe de Barajas
I can’t stress enough the importance of visiting the stunning Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. This fortress offers spectacular views of the city and a glimpse into Cartagena’s colonial past. Be prepared to walk and wear comfortable shoes, lots of stairs to climb!
Safety Tip: Like any popular tourist destination, it’s advised to be cautious with your belongings, especially in busy areas. Avoid displaying expensive jewelry.
Chapter 3: Barranquilla and Carnival Fever
After a few magical days in Cartagena, I decided to take a day trip to Barranquilla, famous for its vibrant Carnival celebrations. A flight to Barranquilla is quite affordable and takes roughly 30 minutes.
The energy in Barranquilla is contagious! I explored the Carnival Museum to get a behind-the-scenes look at this exuberant festival. Seeing the costumes and hearing stories of the celebrations was truly fascinating. If you're there during the actual carnival season (February), expect extraordinary parades filled with music, dancing, and colorful floats!
For lunch, head to El Centro for some traditional arepas. These cornmeal cakes are a staple in Colombia, and the ones here are heavenly.
Chapter 4: The Enchanted Eje Cafetero
Next on my adventure was the Eje Cafetero, or Coffee Triangle, which offers breathtaking views and lush landscapes. I took a bus from Medellín, as it's a scenic route that takes about 5 hours.
Salento and the Cocora Valley
Salento is one of the cutest towns in Colombia! Upon arrival, I checked into a lovely guesthouse and immediately laid eyes on the iconic wax palms of the Cocora Valley. A must-do is to hike in the valley. The standout was a surreal trail leading through the towering palms, some reaching over 60 meters high!
After an exhilarating hike, I recommend visiting Don Felipe's for lunch. Their trout is the star of the menu, served with fried plantains. You'll leave happy and full, guaranteed!
Coffee Fincas
While in Salento, I arranged a coffee tour at Finca El Ocaso via my guesthouse—a fantastic decision! I learned about sustainable practices in coffee production, and it was amazing to see the whole process in action, including picking beans. Plus, the coffee tasting was to die for!
Chapter 5: Relaxing in Santa Marta
After the coffee adventure, I craved some beach time and headed to Santa Marta. The journey is about 6 hours by bus, but the views along the way made it worthwhile.
Tayrona National Park
Set aside a few days to explore Tayrona National Park. The beaches are gorgeous—think lush jungles meeting turquoise waters. I highly recommend doing a day hike through the park to reach La Piscina beach, where I felt like I was in paradise!
On the way to the park, don't forget to stop at The Lost City for a unique experience. This ancient archaeological site offers an adventurous trek through the jungle and stunning vistas.
Food Tip: In Santa Marta, don’t miss Restaurante Ouzo for fresh seafood and delightful Mediterranean options.
Chapter 6: Back to Medellín
With my heart full of memories, I returned to Medellín for my last few days. Flying back was easy, and I had discovered so much during my travels through this beautiful country!
Exploring Local Markets
This time, I made a point to explore Medellín's local markets like Mercado del Río, a gastronomic paradise with different food stalls offering everything from artisan pizzas to traditional local dishes. It’s a great place to try various Colombian flavors in one go.
Final Thoughts & Tips
Reflecting on my epic three-week journey, I can confidently say Colombia’s warmth and beauty are unmatched. Every corner of this country has its own unique charm, and the people are so welcoming.
