7-Day Winter Adventure in Banff's Snowy Paradise
Ah, Banff! Nestled in the Canadian Rockies, it's the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped inside a snow globe. With majestic mountains, frozen lakes, and an endless array of snowy adventures, Banff, Canada, is a winter dreamland. I recently spent a glorious week in this alpine paradise, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of magical. Grab your thermals and let's dive into my seven-day escapade!
Day 1: Arrival in Banff
The minute I arrived in Banff, the crisp mountain air hit me like a refreshing slap to the senses. After collecting my luggage, I hopped on the Banff Airporter shuttle that whisked me away from the airport to Banff Town Centre. My home base for the week was the charming Moose Hotel & Suites, offering cozy fireplaces and incredible mountain views. The hotel’s modern alpine decor instantly welcomed me, and let's not forget the rooftop hot pools – my go-to relaxation spot after long days of exploring.
Dinner was at The Maple Leaf, an eatery right in Banff Town Centre known for its Canadian cuisine. The bison tenderloin was mouthwatering, and as it turns out, maple syrup makes everything better.
Day 2: Skiing at Sunshine Village
On my second day, I answered the mountains’ call and made my way to the magnificent Sunshine Mountain Banff, home to the renowned Banff Sunshine Ski Resort. Thanks to the convenient shuttle service from Banff to Sunshine Village, getting there was a breeze. With over 3,300 acres of ski terrain, it’s a skier’s paradise. As a novice on the slopes, I opted for a beginner’s lesson. My instructor was patient and soon enough, I was zooming (albeit wobbly) down Strawberry Express.
Après-ski took me to the Mad Trapper's Smokehouse, a rustic lodge perfect for warming up with a hot cocoa or something stronger. Later, I explored the Sunshine Mountain Lodge and its surroundings, getting a feel for the resort’s vibrant atmosphere.
Day 3: A Scenic Day Around Lake Minnewanka
In stark contrast to my ski day, today was all about nature’s stillness. Lake Minnewanka Banff, a short drive from the town, was our destination. Wrapped in layers like a human cinnamon bun, I braved the cold for a snowshoe trek along the lake. The vast, serene expanse of ice offered a staggering backdrop for countless photos. I was armed with a thermos of hot chocolate, which paired perfectly with the crisp air and snow-draped landscapes.
Lunch was at the Lake Minnewanka Café, offering unbeatable views and hearty soups to keep us warm. On returning to town, I stopped by the Cave and Basin Banff for a history lesson about the hot springs’ discovery and the birth of Canada's first national park. The historical and geological exhibits were fascinating.
Day 4: Ice Walk at Johnston Canyon
By day four, I was itching for more adventure. Enter Johnston Canyon, an icy wonderland carved by millions of years of water and rock interplay. Guided tours are the way to go in winter, with safety gear provided to stabilize our trek through the canyon’s icy walkways. The frozen waterfalls were mesmerizing, resembling nature’s grand chandeliers.
Post adventure, I indulged in comfort food at Park Distillery, where the campfire-inspired fare served me the best smoked salmon sandwich of my life. I washed it down with their house-distilled spirits—highly recommend the Alpine gin.
Day 5: Rest and Relaxation Spa Day
Midweek called for zen, and the Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Banff Springs delivered. Known as the “Castle in the Rockies,” the hotel itself is a sight to behold. I pampered myself with a hot stone massage followed by a soak in their mineral pool surrounded by snowflakes gently falling—the stuff dreams are made of!
Feeling rejuvenated, I wandered around the grand hotel, stopping at STOCK Food & Drink for a leisurely lunch. Their pastries are little bites of heaven. Evening brought me to the Banff Gondola ride, offering breathtaking panoramic views of six mountain ranges under a sky ablaze in sunset hues.
Day 6: Exploring Banff Town Centre
A self-proclaimed coffee addict, I kickstarted my day at Whitebark Cafe with a piping hot maple latte. Today was dedicated to exploring Banff Town Centre's shops and galleries. I was on a mission to find unique souvenirs and stumbled across the Canada House Gallery, which houses an impressive selection of contemporary Canadian art. If you're an art enthusiast, it’s a must-visit.
Lunch was al fresco at Mañana, offering Mexican fare with a Canadian twist. In the afternoon, I visited the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies to delve into the region's history, culture, and art.
Dinner was a sumptuous affair at The Bison Restaurant & Terrace. The locally sourced, seasonal ingredients elevated every dish. I savored an elk meatloaf that belonged in the hall of fame of comfort foods.
Day 7: Final Ski Day & Departure
No visit to Banff would be complete without a final “hurrah” on the slopes. I returned to Banff Sunshine Ski Resort, this time with the confidence of someone who has (almost) mastered the art of sliding down a mountain on sticks. I took on slightly more challenging runs and reveled in the thrill of gliding amidst snowcapped peaks.
Before departing, I squeezed in one last treat—a BeaverTail outside the resort. This is not actual furry wildlife, but a delightful pastry, perfectly crispy and warm.
My week in Banff concluded with a serene drive back to the airport, reflecting on unforgettable mountain vistas and adventures that etched permanent memories. Banff, with its allure, made me promise myself—I shall return.
